A special collaboration took place as 37 young musicians from Music Generation programmes in Mayo, Waterford, Kerry and Galway County took part in an inspiring masterclass with the US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band. Facilitated by the US Embassy, this unique opportunity allowed the young musicians to immerse themselves in a day of learning, performance and creativity with the esteemed ensemble.
The event took place at Dublin City University in the lead up to US Navy Band’s performance at this year’s Aer Lingus College Football Classic between Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Navy Midshipmen at the Aviva Stadium.
The day began with DCU President Daire Keogh extending a warm welcome to the young Music Generation musicians, the US Navy Band, and representatives from the US Embassy Dublin. Each Music Generation group had the chance to perform followed by The US Navy Woodwind Quintet and the Topside Brass Band.
The Topside Brass Band delivered a dynamic, New Orleans-style jazz performance. Their animated playing style left a lasting impact on the young musicians. They relished the opportunity to learn from the talented US Navy Band members during small-group and one-on-one sessions.
"I’ve been playing music for nearly 10 years, and I’ve never had something like this happen before. It was amazing. It’s hard to put into words, you’ve got to feel it to believe it!" Aaron, Trombone player, Music Generation Mayo/Foxford Brass and Reed Band
A memorable moment of the day was the exhilarating final jam session. It was attended by Lieutenant Commander Kelly L. Cartwright, Director of the US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band, alongside representatives from Notre Dame University. The young wind and brass players had the opportunity to perform alongside the US Navy Band musicians. They were immersed in the vibrant realm of a New Orleans jazz-style ensemble. A unique and unforgettable experience for all involved.
We want to extend a huge thank you to the US Embassy and US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band for making this incredible experience possible for our young musicians. Thanks also to the team at DCU for hosting the masterclass on the St Patrick's Campus in Drumcondra.
