Music Generation Dublin City creates new musical opportunities for children and young people

St Josephs GS 93

Music Generation Dublin City is launching dedicated vocal-led music sessions developed for primary and post-primary schools in the Dublin City region. With a mission to remove barriers of access to music and create inspiring musical experiences for children and young people, Music Generation Dublin City is thrilled to expand its programming to reach more communities across the city.

As part of a national network, Music Generation Dublin City (MGDC) is managed and funded locally by City of Dublin Education and Training Board (CDETB), in partnership with Dublin City Council, and local music education partners.

Music Generation Dublin City was established in 2021 and to date has received enthusiastic feedback from successful pilot programmes in schools and Youthreach Centres across Finglas, Coolock, Raheny and the North Inner City. The team are now inviting more schools to collaborate with Music Generation Dublin City from September 2022!

"Our plan for Dublin City is to bring high-quality performance music education into every community across Dublin City and try to positively impact young people's lives - Whether that's whole classes or small groups, we have programmes we feel can do that!" Kieran McGuinness, Music Development Officer, Music Generation Dublin City.

Music Generation Dublin City works with children and young people across early years, junior years and within post-primary settings and ensures that performance, participation, and inclusion are to the fore in its approach. Its experiential programming includes music and movement, songwriting and production. Vocal and instrumental clubs are also delivered which include the ever-popular ukulele and guitar! Janneke VanNijanten, a Musician Educator who has been working with Music Explorers at St. Joseph's G.N.S in Finglas since February describes the impact she has observed so far:

"I think what I am noticing most about the children’s development is that they are learning to sing more confidently. They love singing on their own now and love performing for the class. They have more confidence now." Janneke VanNijanten, Musician Educator with Music Generation Dublin City

Music Generation Dublin City aims to reach schools and communities across Dublin City Council areas and will commence a phased expansion from September 2022. Schools within these areas can complete an Expression of Interest form here.

Music Generation Dublin City is led by City of Dublin Education and Training Board and Dublin City Council with support from the Royal Irish Academy of Music, Technological University Dublin, the National Concert Hall and The Ark. For further information see www.musicgenerationdc.ie.
