Ireland's first National Concertina Orchestra launched in County Clare

Music Generation Development Officer County Clare

In August, Music Generation Clare announced an exciting new music initiative, the first of its kind in Ireland.

The National Concertina Orchestra is made up of a group of accomplished young concertina learners with the ability to learn complex compositions and arrangements, developed by the well-known composer, tutor and performer, Dr Tim Collins.

Already the ensemble has a membership of some 40 young musicians, ranging from 10 to 18 years of age.

"County Clare has such a rich tradition of concertina music and it has also one of the highest numbers of young learners nationally. They will work alongside each other using standard and baritone concertinas, with four of those baritone concertinas supplied by Music Generation Clare." Pádraig Rynne, Music Generation Clare

The group will have the opportunity to perform, record and make a video across two terms, commencing in September 2020. In line with public health guidance, the Orchestra aims to work towards local and national performance opportunities over the coming months, including through partners at the Consairtín Festival.

"We’re hoping they will perform a new suite of music at the Festival in 2021, as well as potentially joining the main act. In addition, the orchestra will have access to the brand new state-of-the-art Music Generation Clare Studio where they will hopefully be in a position to record a new piece of music for release"

Dr Tim Collins (Lead Tutor) and Pádraig Rynne (Music Development Officer) will guide the Orchestra over the coming months.
