The deadline for applications to the Music Department of St Patrick’s College Drumcondra for a PhD scholarship for doctoral research relating to the field of performance music education in Ireland has been extended to 30th September 2013.
The Music Department of St Patrick’s College Drumcondra invites applications for a PhD scholarship to be awarded for doctoral research relating to the field of performance music education in Ireland with particular relevance to the national performance music education programme, Music Generation.
The scholarship will be three years in duration and will cover the yearly fee of €3,864. It is available for a maximum of three years from the date of first registration. It will be awarded through a competitive process following a call for research proposals. The award will be granted subject to and following successful application to the College Research Committee for registration as a PhD student.
The successful candidate will have a relevant masters degree, demonstrate commitment to and experience in the area and have a viable research proposal. He/she will be based in St Patrick’s College, registered as a doctoral student and will be supervised by a member(s) of the Music Department. They will have a work station in the College research centre and take part in research support programmes offered by the College. In particular they will gain training in statistical analysis and from time to time work on the analysis of data from Music Generation which may form part of their research.
Research proposals are welcome from a wide range of areas and disciplines relevant to performance music education in Ireland embracing practices in the broad fields of Music Education and/or Community Music. Proposals directly arising from the work of Music Generation and the nine local Music Education Partnerships will be particularly welcome. This could include research relevant to genres and practices, structures and policy, participants and providers or the interface with other systems/organisations among many others.
The scholarship is part of St Patrick’s College’s research partnership with Music Generation and is offered by the College to support the development of knowledge and understanding in this growing area.
Applicants should submit a proposal including an up to date CV, and a single page letter of application summarising the following (1) research idea (2) overall theoretical perspective mentioning relevant literature (3) proposed methodology (4 ) potential impact of the research.
