Music Generation’s Research Fellow presents at International Conference

In mid-July, Music Generation Research Fellow Dr. Thomas Johnston will attend and present at the International Society for Music Education’s 14th International Community Music Activity Commission taking place in Salvador, Brazil. Hosted by the School of Music of the Universidade Federal da Bahia, the CMA Commission is a biennial event whose broad objective is to deepen and promote discussions about issues concerning the role of music in communities. At this year’s CMA Commission, delegates from across five continents will share their research and practice during a rich schedule of paper presentations, poster presentations, workshops, and discussions.

The theme of this year’s ISME Conference, ‘Listening to the Diversity of the World’ is particularly resonant with the focus of Dr. Johnston’s presentation entitled ‘The Nature, Power, and Purpose of Critical Diversity: Unveiling the Transformative Potential for Children and Young People of Music Generation’. This research is part of an ongoing research partnership between Music Generation and St. Patrick’s College Drumcondra. Some of the issues that Dr. Johnston will raise in his paper include: the meaning and purpose of ‘diversity’ for Music Generation, principles of effective partnership working in the context of this diversity, and the conditions which support children and young people’s transformative experience within Music Generation.
