Music Generation Limerick City to host a flagship national festival, celebrating teenage creativity!

15 June 2016Music Generation Limerick City will host the first ever Music Generation National Songwriting Showcase for young people at a free concert on Sunday 26 June at The Milk Market, Limerick City. The concert will feature an exciting line-up of young, emerging and established bands, musicians and songwriters from 12 areas of Ireland, including a special appearance by Limerick-based trio The Rusangano Family and other guest artists.

This flagship event will build on a successful one-day pilot festival hosted last summer, scaling it up to a national celebration of teenage creativity.

This brand new collaboration with Music Generation partnership programmes around Ireland is part of Music Generation Limerick City’s month-long music programme for teenagers – a programme of unprecedented scale including music camps in 7 different areas of the city, songwriting sessions, band mentoring opportunities, outdoor gigs and much more.

Speaking at the launch of the programme, Music Generation Limerick City Co-ordinator Boris Hunka said: ‘It is great that in the year we moved into our new Creative Centre in the City – a hub for Music Generation activities and events in Limerick – we are in a position to run our most ambitious summer programme yet. With the amount of events planned, the musical forecast for summer in Limerick City is hot.’

As well as the young musicians set to take to the stage in The Milk Market there will be a series of special guest performances by established artists programmed throughout the day. Among them will be The Rusangano Family – 2 MCs and 1 DJ based in the West of Ireland, whose recent album release, ‘Let the Dead Bury the Dead’, has been met with enormous critical acclaim.

Music Generation Live at the Pery is a Music Generation National Project, presented in partnership with Music Generation Music Education Programmes across Ireland.

7 music creation camps in 7 locations across 7 weeks
Music Generation Limerick City will offer free, three-day music camps to teenagers in 7 different areas of the City, from 13 June through to the end of July. Each camp will culminate in a recording by the young musicians involved. The sessions will blend the expertise of Music Generation’s team of musicians with experts from Limerick Youth Service. The workshops will be based on and around the Music Generation Express – a double-decker bus converted into a workshop venue and field recording facility. Each camp is standalone, so teenagers can choose to get involved in one of them or many.

The Saturday sessions will move to a Friday after the secondary school term has ended and continue through June and July. The sessions are always free and open to new and aspiring young musicians who would like to join.

Limerick Voices is supported by the JP Macmanus Foundation.
