Young Donegal musicians make mid-term music at another phenomenally successful edition of Soundwaves

Soundwaves III performance 560x373
Over five extraordinary days earlier this month more than 20 young musicians gathered together in Letterkenny, Co Donegal, to take part in the third edition of Soundwaves: developing the skills of a 21st century musician. This jam-packed week of music-making at Errigal College was funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership and delivered on behalf of Donegal Music Education Partnership by Wall2Wall Music.

The Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership enables children and young people to engage actively with high-calibre professional musicians from all genres of music.

Soundwaves gave the young musicians involved a unique and valuable opportunity to create music and jam together, explore skills in improvisation and composition, create resources using mobile and digital technology, and of course to have lots of fun! The project was open to writers, instrumentalists, singers and producers with a passion for music in any style – from band to classical, jazz to trad and more – all culminating in a ‘sharing concert’ on the final day of the project, Friday 24 February 2017.

Describing the experience for the young musicians, Martin McGinley of Donegal Music Education Partnership said that ‘The progress made by the young people who take part in Soundwaves has been amazing. They have a great time, forming bands, writing songs and making new friends. But they’re also learning so much, and getting to try out improvising, arranging music and much more.’

Check out some of the photos taken throughout the project on the Soundwaves Facebook page, and stay tuned for videos of the process and the final performance.
