Music Generation tutors from around Ireland gather for Inclusive Music Education forum in Portlaoise

2017 Blog Music Generation Laois SEN seminar 560x374
On Friday 17 February Music Generation Laois hosted a hugely successful forum on inclusive music education, focussing in particular on its programme, The Music Box, which provides performance music education programmes in St Francis’ School and Kolbe Special School, Portlaoise.

The event was part of a Music Generation National Partnership Project, providing a Professional Learning Network for Inclusive Music Education. Previous seminars as part of the Project were hosted in 2016 by Music Generation Cork City and Music Generation Sligo, all of which received support through Music Generation National Projects funding.

The event brought Music Generation tutors from all over Ireland to Portlaoise Youth Education Centre, and featured an Inclusive Choir made up of St Francis’ School Portlaoise and Paddock NS Mountrath. Jack Holmes, pianist, also performed on the day.

Music Generation Laois Coordinator Rosa Flannery described the enormously successful event: ‘the performers received an unprecedented response from the audience, the visiting musicians were extremely impressed with the work happening in Laois in this area, and the children absolutely shone throughout. Music Generation Laois began delivering The Music Box Programme in Portlaoise in 2012, and we are now one of the leading counties in the area of music education for children and young people with special needs.’

The forum included discussions and workshops, and Music Generation Laois Tutor Ros O’Meara provided insight into The Music Box Programme and the work he undertakes in Kolbe Special School.
