MGC was delighted to hold its' first Trad Orchestra Day of 2014-2015 on Sunday 2nd November last in Borris Vocational School. The Trad Orchestra is a performance opportunity for students learning a trad instrument in MGC'S three music hubs around the county: Carlow Town, Hacketstown & Borris.

With over 250 children attending each music hub weekly, the turn-out for the first Trad Orchestra Day was very positive. Firstly the children and young people were given the chance to participate in small instrumental work-shops with the MGC musicians coming together at the end of the day to perform as a structured trad orchestra (directed by Mr. Ciaran Somers).

The MGC Trad Orchestra has been a huge success since its' launch in late 2013. To date there has been a vibrant Trad scene in Carlow however the demand for trad lessons continues to grow steadily around the county. MGC currently has a panel of exceptional trad musicians teaching in our three music hubs on instruments such as the fiddle, trad flute, trad whistle, button accordion, concertina and the uileann pipes.

Children and young people all across the county now have the chance to rent one of the above instruments (subject to availability) from Music Generation Carlow's county-wide instrument bank, which is currently being housed in three libraries around Carlow: Carlow County Library, Tullow Library & Borris Library. Instruments can be loaned at a minimal cost for the rest of the academic year. Please download the Instrument Loan Application Form from here and return FAO Orla Colleton, Music Generation Carlow, KCETB Offices, Carlow.
