This May bank holiday weekend will see the return of Tuned In!, a Music Generation Sligo Masterclass and Performance Programme at The Model, in partnership with Sligo International Chamber Music Festival. This youth strand of the festival will offer young string and wind players and their tutors an opportunity to engage in a dynamic, intensive chamber music experience, specially-curated by senior conductor and brass and wind musician, Professor James Cavanagh (Royal Irish Academy of Music).
This year 40 young musicians ages 12 - 17 from 6 counties in Ireland will take part in the event, including groups from Louth, Carlow, Offaly/Westmeath, Sligo and Donegal. Many of the participants are involved in various youth orchestras and ensembles in their local areas, including Music Generation Louth Senior Strings, Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta, Donegal Youth Orchestra, the Irish Midlands Youth Orchestra and the Irish Youth Wind Ensemble. 6 tutors from the local areas will also travel to Sligo to participate and guide the young ensembles over three days, from Friday 28 April – Monday 1 May, 2017.
Tuned In! will combine masterclasses and performances as participants deepen their understanding of music and improve their playing within the nurturing environment of the Festival. Students and tutors will have the chance to work with internationally-acclaimed ensemble-in-residence, The Vogler Quartet, and other festival musicians on selected repertoire. They will also network and attend Tuned In! festival concerts with other young musicians and ensembles.
On Sunday, 30 April the young and festival ensembles will perform live for the public at a special Concert in The Model. Tickets, costing €5, are available for sale now at sligochambermusic.ie or by phoning +353 71 916 1518.

In addition, this year’s festival will feature the world premiere of Gerald Barry’s ‘Midday’, written in 2016 in response to a co-commission by RTÉ and Sligo County Council to be performed by The Vogler Quartet and RTÉ Contempo Quartet. Performances and masterclasses throughout the festival programme will take place in Drumcliffe Church and The Model, Sligo.
