Five Cork rappers and singers perform at Dublin Castle for the second annual ‘Child Talks’

Last week in Dublin five young rappers and singers from Cork City's north side performed to a room of their peers and representatives from organisations concerned with progressing Children's Rights, at an event presented by the Ombudsman for Children’s Office (OCO). The audience also included special guest speaker, Minister for Children and Youth Affairs, Katherine Zappone T.D.

The OCO developed this educational speaker’s event, called Child Talks, to mark World Children’s Day which takes place annually on 20 November. The main aim of the project is to elevate the voices of young people and provide a positive platform for young people to tell stories that are important to them. The theme of this year's Child Talks was 'Be your Best Self.' Talks on the day, which were presented by nine passionate, articulate and engaged young people, explored topics including mental health, disability, education, period poverty, climate change and community participation. They discussed some of the challenges we face as a society to enacting and realising the rights for young people set out in the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), which was signed by Ireland in 1992.

2019 marked the 30th anniversary of the UNCRC, which was first drawn up in 1989.

The group of rappers and singers, who form part of The Kabin Crew, were invited by the OCO to perform two songs to open and close proceedings. The performers - Jamie Forde (the King), Darren Stewart (MC Tiny), Conor Meehan, Cara Cullen and Sophie McCarthy - raised the roof on the Print Works auditorium with their original work, including recent hit ‘Yeah Boy’.

The Kabin Crew is a collective of young rappers and singers that work on songwriting and recording projects with GMCBeats Workshops at the Kabin Studio, supported by Music Generation Cork City. They have recently performed at Ireland Music Week, UCC, Turners Cross Stadium and will soon be releasing their first music video ‘Yeah Boy’ directed by Brendan Canty (Feel Good Lost). You might also see one of them on this year's Late Late Toy Show, which will be aired on Friday 29 November! Some of the members have acting roles in the BBC comedy series Young Offenders and the short film Christy, which recently premiered at Cork Film Festival.
