Big Bang Performance a Cosmic Success!

Big bang performance on stage 1
The premiere performance of Big Bang was a huge success, as five young composers enjoyed an other-worldly experience, witnessing their compositions being performed to a delighted and appreciative audience. It took courage and maturity for these young composers to see their work through from composition to final performance, and they together with Composer-in-Residence Brian Irvine and a small army of performers and production support, have done a terrific job.

An overview of the production and performance of Big Big:

Over 200 young people from Sligo Academy of Music Sinfonietta, Ursuline College, Grange Post Primary School & Sligo Community Youth Choir performed in the Music Generation Sligo premiere of Big Bang by composer-in-residence Brian Irvine & 5 young Sligo composers. The young composers were Ferdia Durkin, Niamh Feeney, Ciara Murphy, Alice Purcell & Matthew Rooney. The young musicians were joined by teachers from Sligo Academy, by members of Sligo Concert Band, by professional brass musicians from Vox Merus & Artemis Brass Quintets and by Sligo singers Roisin Egan & Jonathan Carter. The performance featured an innovative projection of visuals by artists of all ages in collaboration with Sinead Dolan of Loch Bo Films.

"The realisation of this hugely ambitious composition & performance project was a tremendous achievement by everyone involved. The performance was a brilliant outcome from a very carefully curated process that placed the artistry of the children and young people of Co Sligo at its core. Congratulations to all involved in the superb performance of 'Big Bang'." Rosaleen Molloy, National Director Music Generation.

"My piece explores the trust in the space between people and how you should leave your mind wide open because YOU can acheive anything! This last year has been a magic carpet ride for me and I'd like to thank everyone who made the carpet ride happen." Alice Purcell, Young Composer.

Big Bang is the culmination of a Composer-in-Residence Programme commissioned by Sligo County Council Arts Service.
