Music Generation Radio Documentary

Tune into RTÉ lyric fm on Friday June 29that 7 pm and catch Music Generation – a one-hour documentary telling the story of the genesis of Music Generation, produced by independent radio producer Doireann Ní Bhriain.

Over the last six months, children around Ireland have been getting the chance to learn music through Music Generation – Ireland’s new National Music Education Programme, funded by generous donations from U2 and The Ireland Funds. The overall objective is to support the development of local music education services and to provide high quality music education for all. Programmes have already been put in place in several counties (Louth, Laois, Mayo, Sligo, Cork city and Wicklow) to allow children to discover that music is for everyone, and to encourage and facilitate children of all ages to learn how to sing and play.

In this documentary, Doireann Ní Bhriain travels to Louth, Sligo and Mayo to see how this innovative project is working and meets children, their parents and their tutors. She also talks to some of those behind the project who will tell the story of how it all began, what it has taken to put it in place, and what needs to happen for it to reach more people. Some well known musicians and performers will talk about their own early exposure to music and about the value of getting a music education at an early age. Whether it’s classical or rock music, traditional music or jazz, Music Generation’s vision is to make it possible for all young people to learn, and this programme gives a flavour of how that ambition is being realised.

This documentary is funded by The Broadcasting Authority of Ireland in association with RTÉ lyric fm and Music Generation.
