Congratulations to Music Generation South Dublin tutor Robbie Walsh, who was among those to smash the Guinness World Record for the largest ever bodhrán session on 31 December. Over 1,500 players took part in the “bodhrán smash”, which was hosted by the New Year’s Festival at St Stephen’s Green in Dublin city.

Robbie, who manages The Bodhrán Buzz - a music instruction company who cater for schools, festivals and corporate events - conducted the bodhrán bash, leading the participants to victory in their record-breaking attempt.

The previous World Record of 980 players was blown away by a surge in numbers registering this year. Many of those who took part purchased special ten-inch bodhráns at a cost of €10 to raise funds for the homeless services charity Focus Ireland. In addition, The Bodhrán Buzz hosted a series of workshops and practice sessions ahead of the big event, and donated €1 for each participant.

The Bodhrán Smash was part of the New Year’s Festival Procession of Light.
