Over the past six months students from Coláiste Bhríde and Coláiste Chill Mhantáin, Co. Wicklow, have been taking part in a six-month music composition project together with international composers Brian Irvine and Neil Martin.

On Thursday 28 April, the students will premiere their brand new compositions, ‘Where Tomorrow Takes Us’ and ‘Songs from Room 52’, at Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray.

Funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership and presented by Music Generation Wicklow, A Journey through Composition has provided the students with an incredible opportunity to develop their skills in creation, composition and performance together with professional local and international musicians.

As well as working with Neil Martin and Brian Irvine, the project participants were mentored by Music Generation Wicklow musicians through the process of imagining, composing and performing their original works.

A Journey through Composition has been an amazing experience for all involved and now audiences are invited to witness the energy and enthusiasm of the young musicians as they premiere the resulting compositions:

‘Where Tomorrow Takes Us’, a musical interpretation of the journey of a young refugee travelling from Syria to Ireland, and ‘Songs From Room 52’, which will feature many songs reflecting the thoughts and lives of young people today.

The Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership enables children and young people across the Music Education Partnerships to engage actively with high-calibre professional musicians from all genres of music. The Arts Council has invested €450,000 in the programme (2013-16) which is now facilitating an ambitious range of residencies, collaborative performances and composition projects around the country.
