On 18 August more than 100 young traditional Irish musicians from six Music Generation partnerships around Ireland will travel to Ennis to showcase their skills and work alongside professional musicians at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann 2016.
The groups from Clare, Donegal, Laois, Mayo, Sligo and South Dublin will take part in an afternoon workshop with Antrim-based band Beoga, followed by rehearsals and finally a free, open-air performance for Fleadh audiences at the Supermac's Gig Rig from 6pm – 9pm.
Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann is known to be the greatest showcase for Irish traditional arts in the world. For one week every August the very best of national and international traditional talent comes together to meet, compete and celebrate all that is best in Irish music, song and dance. This year’s host town, Ennis, will see a joyful invasion of musicians and listeners of all ages, drawn together for the music that the Fleadh promises and always delivers.
The young Music Generation traditional groups will have an opportunity to immerse themselves in this extraordinary festival of music-making, sharing and developing their musical skills with professional musicians and their peers, and staging their own performances before an audience of hundreds.
Their stage – the Supermac’s Gig Rig at Lower Market Street – provides a platform for traditional music, dance and song which is readily accessible to large numbers of the general public, free of charge.
This exciting opportunity has been organised by Music Generation Clare in collaboration with five other partnerships. The young traditional Irish music groups - Sáile from Music Generation Sligo, Rolling Waves Trad Group from Music Generation Mayo, Trad Orchestras from Music Generation South Dublin and Laois, The Clare Trazz Experience, and young musicians from Donegal Music Education Partnership - have been busy rehearsing throughout the summer, in preparation for their on-stage performance.
As part of the Fleadh, Music Generation Limerick City will also bring the Express Bus to Coláiste Muire, Ennis for two days, on August 19 and 20, giving young musicians the opportunity to hop on board for a high quality music recording experience.
