We are delighted to announce five residencies under Music Generation’s Partnership Programme with the Arts Council. This enables high-calibre visiting professional musicians to work closely with children and young people in a variety of imaginative, hands-on projects.
As a result of this latest round of funding, young musicians in Music Generation Laois, Music Generation Mayo, Music Generation Wicklow and Donegal Music Education Partnership will have the opportunity to expand their musical skills and experience over and above the work that they do on a weekly basis with their own tutors.
Among the exciting projects getting going later this year and early next year are a choreographed outdoor ‘Stomp’ project for some 200 young people from Music Generation Laois working with leading UK-based drumming practitioner Craig Coggle. Also in Laois, the teen musicians of the Laois School of Rock and Pop will work on a songwriting project with musician and songwriter James O’Connor.
In Mayo, the specially-equipped Youth Music Hub in Ballina Arts Centre will be buzzing with a group of young songwriters from Music Generation Mayo, who will work for four months with musicians-in-residence, ‘Songbirds’ (Carol Keogh, Miriam Ingram and Colin J. Morris).
Music Generation Wicklow’s project also involves teen musicians, this time working over nine months with composer Brian Irvine in an ambitious multi-media composition/performance project.
In Donegal Music Education Partnership, six multi-skilled professional musicians will work across the summer months with a group of 14-19 year olds to develop the composition, improvisation, arranging, recording and performance skills that are needed, as the project title suggests, ‘For the 21st Century Musician’.
The Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership is a three-year programme which sees an investment of €450,000 by the Arts Council to support the work of professional musicians across the Music Education Partnerships, with the aim of adding significant value to the scope and range of the current core tuition being carried out by Music Generation.
