Music Generation Louth Re-imagining the Songs and Music of Oriel

Louth Songs of Oriel 2
Children from four local schools have been working with musicians Zoë Conway, Barry Hynes and composer Elaine Agnew in recent weeks on an exciting new Music Generation Louth project entitled Re-imagining Songs and Music of Oriel.

County Louth was once part of the ancient kingdom of Oriel and this creative project delves into the rich musical tradition of the region, giving children from Dulargy National School, Ardaghy National School, Rathcor National School and Scoil Naomh Lorcan, the opportunity to learn the songs and tunes of their own local area, as well as creating their own songs and polkas.

Inspiration for the project came from local sean nós singer Padraigín Ní Uallacháin’s book, Hidden Ulster: People, Songs and Traditions of Oriel. The children got the chance to meet Padraigín last month when she visited the schools as part of the project to perform a selection of traditional songs from the Oriel and to hear some new music that the children had created.

Workshops will continue in the New Year and the children will come together to perform as part of Féile na Tána Festival in Carlingford in February 2015.

Reimagining Songs and Music of Oriel has been funded under the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership Programme.
