Young people and musicians are involved in five new residency projects this term supported by the Music Generation/Arts Council Partnership.
With funding of €450,000 from the Arts Council (2013-16), the programme enables Music Education Partnerships to bring in high-level guest musicians who are active in the industry across every genre of music plus the recording/technology areas to work creatively and practically alongside children and young people.
This adds significant value to the core Music Generation programmes and not only does it broaden the experience of the young people, it also stretches the musicians in their own professional practice.
Residencies currently starting up include Music Generation Offaly/Westmeath’s ‘Singfest 2016’ under the direction of leading international choral practitioner Greg Beardsell, which involves some 3,000 children and aims to make Offaly and Westmeath into ‘singing counties’ by next summer.
Music Generation Mayo’s ‘Songbirds Songwriting Project’ in Ballina sees a group of teen songwriters, instrumentalists and vocalists working with professional musicians to write, record and perform their own songs, including making their own video documentary of the whole process.
Music Generation Carlow’s project, ‘Upping your Game’ is a development programme for young bands who will work with a team of professional performers and producers to learn the skills needed to be successful in the music industry today.
Music Generation Wicklow is running two side-by-side composition/multimedia residencies. ‘Layers of Sound’ led by composer Brian Irvine and ‘ConFUSION’ led by composer and performer Neil Martin will offer groups of young people in the 13-18 age range the opportunity to compose, record and perform their own music, facilitated by musicians who themselves work in a variety of musical genres.
