Music Generation Limerick City (MGLC) participates in the epic ‘City of Culture NYE’ event, as Limerick City of Culture 2014 kicks-off with an outdoor concert, under the spire of St. Mary’s Cathedral on New Year’s Eve.
MGLC Co-ordinator Boris Hunka is the principal arranger of Limerick's City of Culture Song, which will be performed live on December 31st. The song was pre-recorded on site with 500 performers - choirs, youth groups, professional ensembles and the full range of MGLC projects, of whom about 50 will perform live on the night. This is the most ambitious series of location recordings ever made in the City. Speaking about the recording Boris Hunka said, “The vocalists are Ciara Meade and Conor J Ryan of MGLC Band and the musicians were from the usual suspects such as Windings, The Brad Pitt Light Orchestra and Leading Armies who all came together for it.”
The resulting piece, Limerick’s City of Culture Song, will sound into the heavens from Merchant's Quay on New Year's Eve. The concert will be televised live on RTÉ, and MC’d by Limerick native Will Leahy. There will be a live radio broadcast by Limerick's Live 95fm at 8pm. The concert will be filmed by Eugene O'Connor, another proud son of Limerick who is director of U2’s live videos.
This exceptional night’s entertainment will also include performances from world-class musicians. The City of Culture NYE announced the final acts for the night: “The Coronas, SOAK and local musical heroes Leading Armies are the final additions to the amazing ‘full Irish’ line-up that will perform on stage under the spire of St. Mary’s Cathedral in Limerick City on New Year’s Eve. The acts will join the already impressive line-up of The Strypes, Cranberries star Dolores O’Riordan with the Irish Chamber Orchestra and Maverick Sabre.”
The event is expected to sell out so City of Culture NYE promoters are urging people planning to attend to get their tickets now before they are gone!
