Music Generation Cork City musician to perform with the Voices of Cork Youth Choir

Sam Murphy is one of the young people involved with Cork Community Project as part of Music Generation Cork City. He will be performing with the Voices of Cork Youth Choir at St Luke’s Church this Saturday, November 28, to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Voices of Cork.

In a great interview in this week's Evening Echo, Sam spoke about how and why he writes songs and creates music:

“I started playing music a few years ago and in the last two years I got more involved inj music and the DJ side of things. From there I got into producing and I’m finding that I’m particularly interested in working with music production.

I play the piano and the keyboard and I do a lot of recording myself. I also write songs. Somethings I might come up with the words first, but usually I’ll have a sound in my head which I’ll start recording on the computer. I play by ear and tend to make up a song as I go along. Something I can write a song in five minutes, other times it might take a few days. I’ve written about 40 songs so far and have my music up on Spotify under the name DJ Global Vibes.

I can record all sorts of sounds and rhythms on the computer including programming in drums although I do prefer to work with live drummers, as they have a much better sound. I work with a lot of bands. They come to me with a song and ask me how to go about it and then we work together on the recording. I will record each track separately and then I’d use different effects on each section.

Sometimes I take the recordings home, which gives me the chance to come up with different sound. I’ll add in other instruments which add to the arrangement and come back the next week to see what everyone thinks.

I really love working with computers and programming and have learnt new things as I’m using the equipment. Even the tutors have come to me asking how to work something!

I just love the whole process, from writing a song, recording it, arranging and producing to mixing and finally mastering it. It’s such a buzz!"
